He studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge, between 1651 and 1654, before working a clerk to the Navy Board. He was appointed Secretary to the Admiralty in 1673 and was elected Member of Parliament for Harwich in the same year. Pepys also served as President of the Royal Society, 1684-1686. Upon his death in 1703, he bequeathed his entire library collection (some 3,000 volumes) to Magdalene College, Cambridge.
