NotaThe Order of Franciscans in Brno existed since 1451 when the convent was initiated by the Italian monk of John of Capistrano. The original convent of the Order stood outside the city walls under Petrov, where the Franciscans started the construction of a monastery with a church in 1452. At the monastery stood the church of St. Bernardino of Siena, therefore the monks were called Bernardini.
The work continued probably until the middle of the 16th century. In 1643 the monastery was destroyed by the local inhabitants for defensive reason before siege by the Swedish troops. As the Swedes left, the Franciscan tried to rebuild the monastery, but two years later, before the second siege of Sweden, it was finally perished.
At the end of the Thirty Years' War, the order was replaced into the city. Originally, Franciscans were placed into the former Jewish Quarter, where the Church of St. Mary Magdalene -- the former synagogue -- stood. The Franciscans built there a monastery convent in the early Baroque style between 1651 and 1654.
