AnmerkungHistory of St. Mary Magdalena monastery (nowadays church) is closely associated with the history of the Franciscan monastery, which stood in front of the walls of Brno, on the rocky front of today's Denisovy sady. The monastery originated from the religious enthusiasm of the citizens of Brno, caused by the preaching of the Franciscan missionary of St. John of Capistrano in 1451.
When the Swedish siege was threatened by Brno in 1643, the monastery and the church were pulled down and burned for defensive reasons. The monks retreated to the city where the church of St. Mary Magdalene in the former Jewish quarter, where they built a monastery and also the present church of St. Mary Magdalene in the years 1651-1654. The foundation stone was laid on February 14, 1651. The town council gave the Bernardines four houses near the church, where they built a monastery in the years 1654-1671. A hospital with a pharmacy was also established.
In the years 1677-1704, the entire monastery (including the library and the archive) was richly decorated and furnished thanks to the generosity of the wealthy nobility and the city aristocracy of Brno. In 1656, 55 monks lived in the monastery. There was the famous Franciscan nursery school, and Bernardini had the reputation of excellent preachers.
In 1787, the monastery was under the command of Joseph II., who canceled it and the church elevated to the parish. The monastery building mostly served military purposes, a minor part left to the needs of the parish clergy.
