NoteKároly Somogyi was a bibliophile Hungarian clergy man, who donated his book collection (approximately 43701 volumes) in 1881 to the city of Szeged (to help the rebuilding of the city after the huge flood of the river Tisza in 1879). The city library -- which was established and flourished by the help of Somogyi's library -- is named after him. There is a list (called 'lajstrom') of items which were sent from Esztergom to Szeged by carriages. However the list is not complete well preserved and a useful material for those who are interested in the history of Somogyi's library. Károly Somogyi was born in a protestant noble family in April 1811. His father Sándor Czizmazia (1772-1860) was a lawyer in active connection with the contemporary literate life, interested in history and linguist. Károly' mother, Borbála Kelemen was also well educated. Károly interest in books based on his parent's book collection, which could be the foundation of his own library. Károly Somogyi chose the priesthood as a child. He was consecrated in 1834. From 1840 he became a co-worker and editor of the Religio and Education Church magazine. In 1841 he was appointed professor and supervisor of presbytery in Esztergom. In 1847 he was appointed as a Doctor of Religion at the University of Pest. He was a founding member of the Good and Cheap Publishing Company, the later Saint Stephen Company. In 1858 the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was accepted as a correspondent member. In 1859, he held his lecture on the essence and the task of humanity. He was first appointed to the canons of Pozsony (1861), then in 1865 in Esztergom. He made his nationally acclaimed, noble offer as a canon of Esztergom: in 1881 he donated an invaluable library of 43701 to Szeged (Károly Somogyi City and County Library). He then lived in an increasingly retreated way. He did not give up his intellectual activity, prepared his studies and poems with notes for publication.
