The city of Szeged established its first public library in 1874, completing the offer of private libraries and lending libraries of associations. In 1879, the flooded river Tisza destroyed the city, destroying all its spiritual values. The city began to rebuild it with the help of the home country and also with international support. Károly Somogyi (1811-1888) Esztergom canons founded the spiritual rebuilding of the "capital of the Great Plain" when he offered his library to Szeged on April 26, 1880. He also anticipated that a university of science would be set up in Szeged soon, and that his systematic collection of 43,701 volumes could form the basis of the university's operation. In his offering, he stated that the library is the eternal and inalienable property of Szeged City, whose task is to "extend public education and science in the nation in the vast southern region of the country". He formulated the joint service of public education and science in the foundation charter dated February 15, 1881.
On October 16, 1883, Emperor Joseph Ferenc opened and handed over the Somogyi Library, which has been serving the readership of Szeged ever since.
From the first, he augmented his collection guided by the idea of a public library. He has created an encyclopedic library of outstanding scientific value. He did not collect the rarities, but the value of the content was important for him. The basic works of the sciences could be found in in the library in the best possible edition. In addition to monographic works, Somogyi also collected scientific journals. The fact, that he has written notes into the volumes while reading them, sometimes writing short glosses, sometimes long, analytical essays on the cover or on the cover sheets, makes his library unique. These notes are the testimonies of his enormous literacy, awareness and cruelly critical spirit.
He also created the founding library plan, in which the the main director's principle is the system of sciences. By classifying the sciences into ten subclasses, he created a 'self-exploration' system. Those works related to each other in their content and themes were lined up in one stage on the shelves. (Only in 1956, was the storage-system changed from the scientific to the order of magnitude.)
The collection was discovered in an alphabetical and specialist catalog. The manuscript main pages, so-called. 'Black directory'
were prepared following Prussian Instructions. Determining the storage space of the volumes, the 'specialization', was a director's job. The catalogs are thus kept by former directors: János Reizner, István Tömörkény, Ferenc Móra's handwriting.
The library has consistently developed the Foundation's collection, depending on its material resources. In addition, following Somogyi's example, it was also enriched by significant gifts and legacies. The library became a decisive part of the city's public education and became the founder of Szeged's scientific life. The University of Kolozsvár, until moving to Szeged, was almost the only representative of the city's intellectual life.
After temporary placements, a new home for the library was built twice. In 1897 the Millennium was honored with the so called ‘Public Cultural Palace’, in which the library was operated until 1984 (later shared with the museum).
The new library building, which was handed over to the Library on 6 June 1984, was a major change. The huge 'glass palace' attracts visitors. The library awaits readers for different levels of building (children's library, art library and current journals, reading rooms and special collections). 1998 is a significant milestone in the operation of the library: with the Corvina (Voyager) system, its new purchases are processed exclusively by electronic means.
Since 1973, the Somogy Library has been providing county library functions and has an important role in librarian training.
The collection of the foundation: In the new building of the Dóm Square, the Somogy Library has set a remarkable memory for its founder. A part of the foundation collection, Károly Somogyi's books, were placed in the Memorial Library, which was furnished with the original, more than 100-year-old bookshelves of the library. This living museum is preserving the history of books and libraries. The approximately 10,000 volumes’ selection is the proportionally reduced version of the original collection.
