Georg II (1605 - 1661) ordered in the first years of his reign for the first time the delivery of deposit copies from the Landgraviate to the Court Library. After the death of Louis IV of Hesse-Marburg (1604) inheritance disputes had arisen between Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Kassel around the Marburg region, which could be settled only with the end of the 30-year war: The Marburg region remained at Kassel, the Giessener near Darmstadt. Ludewig campaigned for the proliferation of library holdings through the targeted acquisition of private libraries. In addition, in the period of his reign, the secularization of 1803, through which a number of monastic libraries reached the court library.
These collections were extensively supplemented by the collection of the Cologne baron Johann Wilhelm Adam Hüpsch (1750 - 1805). After the death of the notorious collector this fund fell as legacy Ludewig. It contained more than 4,000 printed works that Hüpsch had acquired from monastic possessions.

In 1817, the court library opened to the public.
