Other InformationInherited the Bridgewater Library through his father and grandfather, the 3rd and 2nd Earls respectively (Francis Charles Granville Egerton, 1847-1914; and George Granville Francis Egerton, 1823-1862), and because of a decline in family fortunes, decided in 1916 to sell the library by auction through Sotheby, Wilkinson, and Hodge. However, while the collection was still being catalogued, Henry E. Huntington offered $1 million for the library en bloc, and the offer was accepted early in 1917.
