Biographical dates - Period of existence1630-1641
Other InformationFrom Fabrizio Quaglia [February 2023]: About him we know very little. Apparently the Dominican friar Girolamo was born in the town of Durazzano (Benevento). About the years 1630-1640 he was ‘padre lettore’ (i.e. professor of theology in the friars’ convents) in Ferrara, where he preached to the Jews every week (cf. Guido Dall’Olio below). In 1636, when several Modenese Jews were prosecuted for possession of prohibited books, he was commissioned by the Inquisitor of Modena friar Giacomo Tinti from Lodi (d. 1647) to censor those Hebrew texts, since he was considered very experienced in Hebrew and in forbidden books, with the help of the neophyte Francesco Maria de Giacinti (formerly Yehudah b. From the study of his censor’s notes it appears that in the years 1640 and 1641 Girolamo revised in Modena and Reggio Emilia many books and manuscripts already expurgated by Camillo Jaghel, Renato da Modena and Luigi da Bologna. In this regard it should be noted that ‘Durazzano’ in his inscriptions was misread by all scholars as ‘Durallano’ (for example by William Popper, below) until Mauro Perani (below); this is due to the calligraphy of Girolamo, who wrote his zzs in a way very similar to lls.
