Schocken Sohne department stores, in 1930 established the Schocken Institute for Research on Hebrew Poetry in Berlin, in 1931 founded the publishing company Schocken Verlag. Collected a lot of rare Hebrew books. In 1934 after the Nazis stripped him of his German citizenship Schocken left Germany for Palestine. In Jerusalem he built the Schocken Library, founded the Hebrew-language Schocken Publishing House. In 1940 went to the United States, in 1945 founded there the English-language Schocken Books publishing company.
