Altre informazioniFull name Ross Revillon Winans. Born 8 June 1850 in St. Petersburg, Russia, the son of Thomas DeKay Winans and grandson of Ross Winans the industrialist (1796-1877). Married, firstly, Mary Elizabeth (Minne) Greenway Ludlum (1851-1872), and secondly, his first cousin Catherine Neva Beatrice Whistler (1860-1907), a relation of the artist. A man of leisure, Winans spent several periods abroad, but his chief and final residence was in Baltimore, Maryland. Following the death of his second wife and two children in 1907 he became a recluse and increasingly an invalid. At his death on 25 April 1912 he was survived by one son, Thomas George Winans, from whom he was estranged. His brother-in-law Ross Winans Whistler (1858-1927) served as executor of his estate.
Ross Winans’s bookplate is dated 1850 at the bottom (the year of his birth) and commemorates illustrious printers and authors. George D. Smith acquired at least part of his book collection, later selling many of the items to Henry Huntington.
