In 1821 he was elected Metropolitan of Chalcedon (1821-1822). He was imprisoned by Turks for 7 months. In 1822 he was elected Patriarch. He refused to allow an English Protestant to publish a translation of the Bible to Demotic Greek by the Patriarchal Typography. He was deposed in July 1824. After his death, his fortune was bequeathed to churches and charitable institutions.
