Altre informazioniFounded by the Dominicans of Rome after the donation they had received from the cardinal Girolamo Casanate (1620-1700), who gave them a collection of about 25,000 volumes. In the convent (where there was already the Library of S. Maria sopra Minerva) the Dominicans had a new site built to host the Casanatense collection, which became one of the most active and important library in Italy in the 18th century. A major figure in the Republic of letters was the librarian G.B. Audiffredi (1714-1794). Evidence of ownership: stamp with a tower and the initials of the cardinal: H.C. In 1884, after the suppression of religious houses and a period of shared governance between the Dominicans and the newly constituted Italian State, the Casanatense was definitely acquired by the State administration [A. Panzanelli].
