D'Elci had decided to donate his collection to Florence as early as 1818. After his death, in 1824, the books were thus moved back to Florence, effectively becoming part of the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana. Until 1841, however, they were hosted by Senator Giovanni degli Alessandri, director of the Academy of Fine Arts, when the collection finally entered the Laurenziana, where in the meanwhile a dedicated hall had been built to host the collection.
