Great-grandson of Izaak Enschedé, the founder in 1703 of the Enschedé printing firm in Haarlem; studied in Leiden; active both as lawyer and in the family firm. After his death, the library formed largely by his predecessors during the 18th century was sold (catalogue by Muller and Nijhoff, December 1867).
