NoteFounded by Henry E. Huntington (1850-1927), railroad magnate and real-estate developer. The Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery was established in 1919 by a deed of trust, and this remains its legal name. In 1920, Huntington transferred his library from New York City to his estate in San Marino, where an increasing number of visiting researchers were permitted to consult the books. On 18 March 1927, the library, museums, and gardens were opened for the first time to the general public. (See D. Dickinson, Henry E. Huntington’s Library of Libraries (San Marino, CA, Huntington Library, 1995), pp. 225–6). Since 1972 the institution has also used the forms "Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens" or simply "The Huntington".
