Other InformationFounder in 1903 of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, which consisted entirely of her collections. Her bookplate was modeled on that of Nicolas Yemeniz, featuring two sides of a coin with the winged foot of Hermes surrounded by the inscription ΑΓΓΕΛΛΟΣ ("messenger"), referring to the deity’s role as messenger of the gods (obverse) and a crowned ‘Y’ between the words ‘EX LIBRIS’ ‘ISABELLA’ (on reverse). Gardner’s bookplate was designed for her by Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950). The winged foot was drawn after a sculpture by Augustus St. Gaudens (1848-1907) created for Gardner in 1892.
