Biographical dates - Period of existence1145-1803
Other InformationDissolved 1802; see Cottineau II 3439-40; MBK I 407-8 and 598; Krämer II 818-22; Gustav Hänel, “Handschriften im Schlosse Liebenau bei Ravensburg”, Serapeum, 8 (1847), 43-5; H. Binder, “Bibliotheca Weissenaviensis. Aus der Geschichte der Klosterbibliothek”, in Weissenau in Geschichte und Gegenwart. (Sigmaringen, 1983), 231-44, and Helmut Binder, “Schicksale der Weißenauer Bibliothek nach der Klosterauflösung”, in his 850 Jahre Prämonstratenserabtei Weißenau 1145-1195 (Sigmaringen 1995), 489-505. Many volumes from the abbey were taken at dissolution by the last abbot, Bonaventura Brem, to Liebenau, thence via a fellow Weissenauer, Friedrich Schlegel, to Franz von Waldburg-Zeil and his son Georg, a Jesuit, who placed them in a Jesuit establishment “Stella Matutina” in Feldkirch, eventually returned to the Waldburg-Zeil family at Schloss Zeil [from Binder, as summarized by Klaus Graf, “Oberschwäbische Adelsbibliotheken”, available in two slightly different PDF versions at http://eprints.rclis.org/7542/1/Oberschwäbische_Adelsbibliotheken.pdf and http://publikationen.ub.uni-frankfurt.de/files/13056/Graf_Adelsbibliotheken.pdf]
Bindery: According to Kyriss 35 (and EBDB w000056, following Kyriss), there was a bindery active ca. 1478-1514. However, Needham (revised IPI) suggests rather an Ulm bindery, based on the location of early owners of copies in Kyriss 35 bindings; an article by Armin Schlechter, “Die Einbände der Inkunabeln aus der Bibliothek des Zisterzienserklosters Salem unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Werkstatt Salem-Weißenau (Kyriss 35 = EBDB w000056)”, in Einbandforschung 24 (2009), pp. 33 ff., has not yet been consulted. [NB: The version of Needham’s IPI available on the CERL web site as of this writing (21 December 2020) suggests the bindery Kyriss 35 was located in Constance; Needham has revised that attribution to Ulm (private communication to John Lancaster)]
Tubingen: (Lkr. Ravensburg). Kloster (1145-1803) aufgehoben durch Graf Sternberg. Teile der Bibliothek kamen mit Abt Bonaventura Brem (s. o.) nach Liebenau (s. o.). Zur Bibliothek: Brenner; Fischer, 132-33.
