TypePerson
Biographical dates - Period of existence1690 - 1766
Other Informationyounger brother of Antoine Pâris (see above); 'garde du Trésor royal', 'conseiller d'État', 'banquier de la Cour'. A personal communication from Roger Middleton, Dept. of French, University of Nottingham: `The “P” with the coronet of a marquis [see L-119] will be that of the youngest of the four brothers, Jean Pâris de Monmartel, marquis de Brunoy, comte de Sampigny, born at Moirans on 1 August 1690, died at Brunoy on 10 September 1766. His second wife, married on 10 October 1724, was Antoinette Pâris, his niece, the daughter of Antoine. He was garde du Trésor royal, conseiller d'État, and banquier de la Cour. On the death of his brother Antoine he inherited (through his wife, presumably) the title of comte de Sampigny, and it is likely that he also inherited the movable property including the library. The identification depends upon the use of a coronet of a marquis; no other branches of the family are known to have held such a title (though see the note appended to the entry for Bibliotheca Parisiana, above). His arms, impaling those of his third wife, appear on a binding mentioned by Rau [A. Rau, `Bibliotheca Parisiana', Book Collector, 18 (1969)] (p. 316). At his death the books no doubt passed to his son Armand Louis-Joseph Pâris de Monmartel, marquis de Brunoy, comte de Sampigny, born at Paris on 25 March 1748, died at Villers-sur-Mer on 9 April 1781. It is, however, most unlikely that he took any interest in the books other than for their cash value. His property was the subject of an enforced sale for debt in 1777, and no doubt the library was sold at this or some other time in his efforts to raise funds. I do not know whether there is an extant inventory that would confirm this speculation...'; see anonymous sale, 1791, Bibliotheca Parisiana.
