In 1889 he sold the family library, likely started at the time of James Hope (d. 1641), 1st Earl of Hopetoun. The library included, among the other, 'the Annandale books and those of the Strassburg Jesuits. ... The Gutenberg Bible was included in the sale' (BL Clark's slips). John Adrian Louis spent most of his time in Australia, as governor (entry in ODNB by C. Cunneen; Bod-Inc Index of provenances). Bookplate: Two maiden supporters, "Tria Juncta In Uno" on charge, crown as helm/helmet, globe as crest, rainbow above crest, "At Spes Non Fracta" as motto.
