Other InformationPainter, antiquary, and dealer. The son of James Hay of Carriber (Scotland) and Magdalen Robertson, one of six children. Travelled frequently to Italy and France, from around 1716 onwards, to acquire paintings, prints, manuscripts, books etc. He was in Rome in 1716 and acquired material for Thomas Coke of Holkham (on his Grand Tour when he was 15 to 20 years old) and Edward Harley (2nd Earl of Oxford); then also in Venice, Padua, Florence, Bologna. Back in the UK, he would arrange sales by auction in London, at his address in Monmouth Court, and have catalogues published, for example in 1725, 1739, 1741, 1743, 1745, always with an indication 'collected abroad'.
