NoteThe Antwerp city library was founded in 1481, burned down in 1576 (so-called 'Spanish Fury') but re-established.
In the early 17th century it merged with the library of the Chapter of the Antwerp Cathedral of Our Lady.
In the early 19th century it merged with the library of the Ecole centrale of the Département des Deux-Nèthes, which contained books seized from religious institutions in the department.
In 2008 it was officially renamed into 'Erfgoedbibliotheek Hendrik Conscience'.
