Note sur le décorThe full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion is hand-coloured, the Cross coloured with brown ink, the Crown of Thorns green, the faces, hands and feet of Mary and John pink, Christ's loincloth yellow, Christ's body pink, then graphically daubed with red depicting his blood, which drips and flows from his body; other details are highlighted in blue and brown. The woodcuts are washed in yellow ink; in the opening quires the woodcut initials are also washed in yellow ink.

Description de la reliureRebound, the original sixteenth-century brown calf covers lifted and on-laid; the covers blind tooled to a panel design; outer frame made up of repeated foliate staff tool (Oldham, Basil, English Blind-Stamped Bindings (1952), plate X, tool 21); the central panel decorated to a lozenge design, the spaces filled with impressions of a diamond-shaped floral tool (Oldham (1952), plate X, tool 24), round floral tools (Oldham (1952), plate X, tool 26), shield tools signed W.G. (Oldham (1952), plate X, tool 20) and lozenge-shaped double-headed eagle tools (Oldham (1952), plate X, tool 29); spine direct-lettered in gilt: Birgitta Revelationes et vita; sewn onto four raised supports; fore-edge direct-lettered in MS: 25 TVR.R. CREM; 21 fore-edge tabs, some lettered in MS; both covers have traces of five metal bosses and traces of two pairs of clasps at the fore-edge, with the catches on the lower cover; these tools attributed by Oldham to his W.G. and I.G, working from Cambridge; according to Oldham, bindings by W.G. and I.G. are found on books printed between 1478 and 1533 (see: Oldham (1952), p. 16).
