Provenance

Binding note15th-century Gothic full leather binding. Blind-stamped brown tanned skin. Besides some scratches, the front cover is in a relatively good condition. However, the back cover is visibly deteriorated: covering material worn out, blemishes. A strip of leather adjacent to the spine is detached and the board is exposed.
Fragments sourced from a 15/16th century handwritten text on paper were used under the leather (visible especially on the rear board). Similarly, two other pieces were used for the spine (parchment), with the text glued directly on the text block. Spine lost probably early on, label pasted directly on the gathering (partially preserved: “29 …. 5”).
Two engraved catch plates; straps lost (presumably cloth straps in a combination of yellow and red).

Time period1693 - 1773
Provenance nameJesuit College, Cluj, 1579-1773 [Corporate body; Former Owner] (Unknown, Religious institution, No characterisation/lay)
Provenance TypeInscription
NoteNote on f. 1r: “Societatis Jesu Inscriptus Catalogo Collegii Claudiopolitani”
Date of evidence1765
Decoration NoteOne major initial completed on f. 1r: “Q” of “Quod nihil apud me”. Blue lombard (9 lines) with a red outline and pen flourishes in red ink on the left side of the letter.
Red lombards added in two successive stages, especially in the first half. Marked difference in ink colour: a set in bright red and another in burgundy red. Some initials were never added, however this is only an isolated case. Some of them were carelessly mistaken for another letter, despite the letter d’attente. Probably put in place by a previous owner/reader. On a few instances the letter is executed badly; e.g., on f. 65v, the letter “M” of “Miror” is drawn like a double capital “N”: “NN”.
Manuscript notesSmudges of brown ink throughout the volume, although only the division into “books” is formerly marked in brown ink (early 16th c.). Additionally, a few annotations on the rear inner board; front inner board and front flyleaf are also in brown ink.
All the other annotations are made in red ink by a 16/17th century anonymous reader.
