ShelfmarkInc. 74a/ Inc. C. 74a
Also bound with this copySeneca, Lucius Annaeus: Epistolae ad Lucilium. - [Strassburg : The R-Printer (Adolf Rusch), about 1475] [is00379000]
NotePrevious shelfmarks:
Front inner board: “N. 24”; “C. 7” (in red, later crossed out); “Ősny[omtatvány] 83. B. 13-14” (label)
Front flyleaf: “29. B. 24” (cut out); f. 1r: “70. B. 15”
At least four different systems of foliation (medieval and modern), ranging from 15th to 21st century; partially lost to trimming.

Passages from Ovid’s Epistulae ex Ponto (Book IV; III. i) were written on the front flyleaf: "Aequor Jasonio pulsatum remige primum"; "Ecquod erit tempus, quo vos ego Naso relinquam"; "An mihi barbaria vivendum semper [in ista?]…"

An anonymous reader writes in the margins of f. 82v: "Gab[riel]. Bathory 2 [secundus] a Neron", probably expressing his anger towards Báthory’s cruel leadership programme. Gabriel Báthory was Prince of Transylvania from 1608 to 1613. He converted to Calvinism and became by inheritance one of the wealthiest members of the Transylvanian nobility. With the help of the Hajdús, he forced prince Sigismund Rákóczi to abdicate and replaced him in 1608. He was assassinated in 1613.

Binding noteThe leather is damaged (especially on the front board); spine with two labels [(author and title ("Orosii, Historia") and a shelfmark ("29. d3. 24")].
Four out of eight corner pieces; clasp-plates and only one strap. Judging by similar bindings, the volume probably had a central boss.
The model on the front cover is barely visible: central frame filled with interlace patterns; middle frame with floral stamps (14mm), and other circular elements displayed equally, three by three, on the length of the rectangular frame (12mm). Different design on the back cover. The spine is also decorated.
White parchment used to reinforce the structure of the book.
