ShelfmarkOtto Schäfer copy, sold New York December 1994
NoteWanting the blank leaves 1, 15 and 372. With 19 engravings; those for Cantos I and II are printed in green and black; the others, pasted in, show the second state with the Roman numbering 8, darker ink and glue shadows. The engraving for Canto I is cut off at the bottom, as is usually the case. Under the engravings for Cantos VII and VIII can be seen traces of glue from a previous pasting: apparently a previous owner exchanged the original prints for better ones.
A copy of the portrait of Dante by Raffael Morghen after Stefano Tofanelli of around 1800 is inserted, along with a bibliographical note by or after R. Wilbraham, with additions by Andrew Fountaine.
NoteCreated by John Goldfinch, derived from the description in the Schäfer catalogue by Manfred von Arnim
