NoteBookplate of George Ticknor. When Ticknor was in Göttingen, in 1816, he received an invitation from Harvard asking him to accept the newly established Professorship of French and Spanish Languages and Literatures. The offer allowed him two years to prepare his lectures while continuing his European travels and supplied him with a thousand dollars to purchase books. During his travels, he used a portion of his Harvard book money to acquire, among other volumes, some twenty editions of Dante. This volume was not included in the large donations of books he began making in 1860 to the Boston Public Library, but it was donated by his heirs to the Harvard College Library after his death. One can assume that this happened because the copy was purchased with the Harvard funds, and thus was acquired by Ticknor during his European travels.
