The University was founded in 1817. For the occasion, the city of Liège donated to the University Library around 7000 volumes from its Public Library. Not long after this initial donation, the University Library received the fond from Averbode abbey (around 8000 volumes) and 150 manuscripts from Saint-Trond abbey.
