NoteCreated by Camilla Marangoni for the Polonsky project "Dante 1481"
Physical DescriptionLeaves 1, 14, 15, 95, 96 are blank. Illuminated initial at the beginning of the preface (“Proemio”). Opening of Canto I of the “Inferno”: engraving with Dante and Virgilio framed by a naturalistic illuminated decor. The illuminated initials “D” and “P” open the preface of Canto I of “Purgatorio”.
Copy FeaturesLater decoration
Copy Features - NoteSecond engraving on a separate leaf pasted on the back of l. 13. Apparently it used to be part of the binding in the second half of 19th century.
The floral border surrounding the opening of the commentary appears to be non-italian and contemporary r 16th-century; the illuminated initial and border surrounding the opening of the Comedia may be later; it is difficult to tell from the digital copy with altered colouring.
