Description of Copy

Copy Id02140630
Holding InstitutionParis, Bibliothèque nationale de France (FR)
ShelfmarkRés. Yd. 17
NoteCreated by Camilla Marangoni for the Polonsky project "Dante 1481", with data provided by Nathalie Coilly (Bibliothèque nationale de France).
Physical DescriptionTwo engravings for Cantos I and II and a second impression of the second engraving, before Canto III (Category B of Hind's classification system).
Size of leaves422 × 282 mm
Copy Features - NoteFrom A. M. Hind, "Early Italian Engraving", p. 105: "Coloured blue, red, yellow and green. The second impression of No. 2 is yellowish in tone as if No. 3 had originally been pasted over it."
Integration of the missing leaf c1 with a smaller one, coming from another specimen. This second example of leaf c1 (with the verso, bearing the repetition of the engraving corresponding to Canto II) was mounted after the original f.c1. It was probably taken from the specimen "with three images” seized from the archiepiscopal library of Salzburg [cf. book binding of the Bibl. nat. held by Joseph Van Praet, A.M. CCCXXIV, p. 81], maybe identical to the specimen with "Very short margins", returned according to Van Praet in 1815 at the Royal Library in Munich, where this specimen is no longer found, cf. BSB-Ink D-9.

NoteOn the third flyleaf there is a letter by Cristoforo Landino dedicated to Bernardo Bembo, whom he praises for the restauration on Dante's grave in St. Francis (Ravenna), in 1481. According to Ledos, the letter states that by that time 1200 copies of this edition had already been printed. However, Tenneroni rejects this interpretation and claims that the sentece refers to the edition printed by Octavianus Scotus (23rd April 1484) or to the sum of the copies printed in the first two editions.
Bembo's motto ("Virtuti et honori") in a medallion drawn on the fourth flyleaf. Bembo's coat of arms on l. 15r.

Decoration NoteOn the fourth flyleaf there is drawing of the tomb of Dante in Ravenna, with the portrait of Dante writing. Above the portrait, there is a medallion with the motto "Virtuti et honori" (c. 1482-1483). Illuminated initial, marginal decoration and coat of arms of Bernardo Bembo on l. 15r. More illuminated initials on ll. 162r, 163r, 269r, 270r.
