noteThe type used for the number "1" in the year 1481 on the spine makes it highly probably that the binding was made for Otto Thott’s library, as it is often seen on bindings made for his library.
The edition figures "in duplo" in the handwritten catalogue of Thott’s library ("Catalogus Librorum a primis incunabulis Artis Typographicae usque ad Annum 1500 qui in Bibliotheca Comitis de Thott reperiuntur Oslo", National Library, ms. fol. 36:1, Libri Artium elegant. Poetæ recent. Fabulæ etc; nr. 8). The printed catalogue (Rasmus Nyerup (ed.), "Catalogi Bibliothecae Thottianæ tomus septimus. Libros cum ab Inventa Typographia ad Annum MDXXX Excusos tum Manuscriptos continens", S. Popp, 1795 Copenhagen) has two numbers for the edition: nr. 2043-2044. This means that at a certain point in the history of the Royal Danish Library (before Madsen’s catalogue was made, but not necessarily a long time before), one copy has been traded away.
bindingNote18th-century “Cambridge binding” with calf covers in two colours, tipically Danish. Blind tooled decoration and gilt spine decoration. The marbled endpaper is the kind of marbled paper used in 18th-century Denmark (see Anker Kyster, “Kulørt Papir til Bogbind”. Bogvennen, 1. januar 1928, p. 74). Edges sprinkled in black.
