Physical DescriptionLacks the first 195 leaves (quires [1-19]) and leaf 30/3. -- Ms. signatures (at upper right corner of first recto in each quire) are 20-40, indicating that there was a companion volume with the first 19 quires, presumably also so numbered. There are also traces of ms. signatures at the more common lower right corner, but almost entirely trimmed away and not legible. -- Press pinholes are visible at top and bottom, aligned with the center margin between the two columns of text. -- Quire [29] is probably best described as [29⁸ (29/7+1)], though possibly [29¹⁰ (-29/2)]; a large stub appears between the first and second leaves of the quire as bound.

Documentary Evidence
NoteLot 93 in the 1873 Berlin sale of Barnheim's library. His ms. notes and signature on front free endleaf 1r.
Binding noteHalf red leather and red cloth, with gilt spine label: "Die deutsche Bibel Strassburg Mentelin um 1465." Parchment ms. quire guards. An unusual closure apparatus, consisting of two pairs of red leather tabs, attached to the front and back covers, which mesh and are intended to have a metal stylus inserted, holding the volume closed (stylus not present). Edges appear to have earlier been stained blue, and then over-stained red or ochre. Tipped to front free endleaf 2r is a German bookseller's description (with a long quotation in French) of a different copy (with variant attribution of printer). Tipped to rear free endleaf 2r is an article by Gerhoh Steigenberger: "Literarisch-kritische Abhandlung über die zwo allerälteste gedruckte deutsche Bibeln, welche in der kurfürstl. Bibliothek in München aufbewahrt werden" (München, 1787).

Documentary Evidence
NotePresumably purchased at the Barnheim sale, 1873; gift to the Grolier Club, 1894. No. 11 in the catalogues cited above. Although the bookplate describes the Bruce collection as having been gathered by George Bruce as well as his son, this copy could not have belonged to George, who died in 1866, before the Barnheim sale.
