A. Edward Newton's bookplate on front endpaper.

Start date is unverified, but earliest possible.

The book contains the following note from Seymour de Ricci, dated 19 Dec. 1919, from NY. 107/W/43, on Grolier Club letter paper:
"Dear Mr. Newton
In W. Blades, 'The life and typography of William Caxton,' vol. II (London, 1863.40) p. 260 we read: The Recuyell–"Three libraries in America–the Astor and Mr. Lenox's, in New York, and the Loganian Library, Philadelphie, possess each 2 leaves of ;The Recuyell' being portion of a fragment purchased some years ago by a London bookseller.' Further details are given in Blades' later work The biography an typography of William Caxton. Second ed. (London, 1882.120) p. 173 (under the heading of the French 'Recueil')
"A fragment of eight leaves was purchased some years ago by a bookseller, and made into four thick wolvumes, each volume having two printed leaves with a hundred blank leaves on each side. These were all disposed of as specimens to lie open in the show-cases of museums.'
I thought you might be glad to have these two records of your folios. You are now the only private collector to own a single leaf of Caxton's first book.
Of the book itself 17 copies are known, 10 being in public libraries the six lucky owners being Mr. Morgan (two copies), Mr. Huntington, Mr. C. Pforzheimer, the Marquess of Bath, Mr. T. Fitzroy Fenwish and an anonymous English collector.
Allow me to avail myself of this opportunity to thank you agan for the delightful reception I rexeived at your hands in Oak Knoll and for your kindness in opening me your closets of hidden treasure.
Please remember me to Mrs. Newton and believe me
Yours very sincerely
Seymour de Ricci."
