DescriptionTwo different watermarks appear in this copy, each in two variences from the two different papermaking moulds used:
1) Briquet 9227, letters A|B within a circle and star above, dated 1496, Venice, w 32 h 102. This is identified by Paul Kristeler, (1893) Italienischen Buchdrucker und Verlegerzeichen bis 1525, Strassburg as deriving from printer and publisher Angelus Britannicus (1483-1511), Brescia.
2) Similar but not identical with crown with cross above, Briquet 4894 and 4895, dated 1495/8, a 76 w 49 h 133

The watermarks appear in the following sequence in the signatures:
A to M: A|B
N to Ρ: Crown
Σ: mixed crown and A|B
Τ to Υ: A|B

NoteSeveral other bindings by Gruel exist in the Mavrocordatos collection of the National Library of Greece, most of which are covered with exactly the same burgundy-red coloured marocco leather. Many of the other Gruel bindings have the binder's name tooled in gold at the bottom of the spine. Also, the same marbled papers and turn-in gold tooling are identified.
