Provenance 1568–1652

Areae-sw
Provenance nameJohannes Bureus, 1568–1652 [Person; Former Owner] (Male, Librarian / Curator, No characterisation/lay)
Provenance TypeExlibris
NotePrinted bookplate on front pastedown : "insedenti throno agnoque benedictio", “Johannes Thomae Agrivillensis Bureus, possessor”.
The book must have stayed in Frombork after Langhannike's death.
In 1626 Frombork was taken over by the Swedish army of King Gustav Adolf. Between 1626 and 1635, the cathedral was looted and many cultural artifacts were shipped to Sweden.
It is very likely that this is how the book came to Bureus, who was close to Gustav Adolf and his librarian. Some books of Nicolas Copernicus, who had been also a canon of Warmia, were seized at that moment and came to Sweden.
Someone added in pencil on Bureus exlibris "2 Carolinen 1683".
Method of acquisitionunknown

PlaceLondon
Areae-uk-en
Time period - 1911
Provenance nameHuth, Alfred Henry, 1850 - 1910 [Person; Former Owner] (Male, Business, No characterisation/lay)
Provenance TypeExlibris
Bibliographic Evidence
NoteGilt-stamped white leather bookplate of Huth ("Ex Mvsaeo Huthii/Animus non res") on front pastedown.
Problem: the bookplate itself doesn't say clearly either it belonged to Henry or to his son Alfred, who, after his father death (1878), kept on extending the collection. No evidence of a purchase by Henry have been found yet, as the book isn't mentioned in the 1880 Huth catalogue.
The book was sold at the Sotheby's sale of 1911. See number 596 p.168 of Sotheby’s catalogue "Huth, Henry, Catalogue of the famous library of printed books, illuminated manuscripts, autograph letters, and engravings collected by Henry Huth", 1911, [London] Dryden Press: J. Davy & Sons [1911-20].
