Segnatura di collocazioneΟΥΜ 34
Nota alla collocazioneFirst edition of Theodoros Gazis’s (circa 1400-1475) Grammar and the only one, together with the Περὶ μηνῶν, of his Greek writings to be printed before 1500. It is a grammar text-book he himself composed while teaching in Ferrara, and it represents the fifth printed grammar composed by Greeks with the aim of acquainting Westerners with the Greek language, such as E. Chrysoloras (1471); K. Laskaris (1476); D. Chalkokondyles (circa 1493) and M. Moschopoulos (about 1493).
This edition, printed at Aldus Manutius’s printing house in Venice, the second incunable from Aldine press in chronological order, which, besides the Περὶ μηνῶν and the two works by Apollonius of Alexandria, also comprises the Περὶ τῶν ἀριθμῶν by Herodianus: a treatise that had not been printed in its entirety except in substantial encyclopaedias such as the Thesaurus of Errikos Stephanos (1572). Gazis’s Grammar was the text book used in the humanist schools of Venice, Florence and elsewhere and was repeatedly reprinted at N. Glykys’s and D. Theodosios’s Greek printing houses in Venice.
