NoteCreated by A. Panzanelli, additions by John Goldfinch
Physical DescriptionWithout the blanks. Containing the engravings to cantos i, ii, viii, xvi-xix, with that to canto ii repeated before canto iii; that to canto i is slightly cropped. Ornamental capitals on 2a and 16a supplied at a late date. An engraved portrait of Dante and a sheet of MS. bibliographical notes in English, partly by Cracherode, and partly by an earlier owner, are inserted at the beginning.
After leaf D10 is a duplicate of the same leaf printed on the recto only, with a contemporary explanatory note.
A number of leaves appear to be supplied from other copies, including f.c1 (with engraving) and f.[*]7. A note in an English 18th century hand notes the presence of six engravings; Cracherode notes in the 1790s that there are nine. One of the additions must be leaf c1, and the plate gummed to leaf f1 is certainly an addition — damage to the leaves at this point is not present on the print.
The openings ee7 verso / ee8 recto, i2 verso / i3 recto and r3 verso / r4 recto have been used to press botanical specimens.
