Inscribed 'Dono mihi datus a ve[nerab]jli p[ri]ore Car[tusiae] Ge[m]nicen[sis] 1547' on leaf A1 of item no. 1 in volume, i.e. the Charterhouse in Gaming, Austria. Marked 'St. 1. 10' in blue crayon on upper pastedown. From the Acton Library, its shelfmark '45' in pencil on upper pastedown. Bought by Andrew Carnegie and given by him to Viscout John Morley, who presented it to Cambridge University in 1902.
Beschreibung des EinbandsOriginal blind-tooled goatskin over bevelled wooden boards, sewn on three double-split alum-tawed skin spine bands, with two endbands of alum-tawed skin core and simple hemp [?] sewing, parchment manuscript fragments used as endpapers and paper manuscript fragment used as pastedowns, two decorated rectangular brass catches at fore-edge of upper board, stubs of two brown leather straps for fastening clasps (wanting) held at fore-edge of lower board by two small rectangular brass plaquettes, and decorated brass corner-pieces, executed at Gaming Charterhouse (EBDB w002537), Austria, 16th century, blind tools including a finial (EBDB s017802), a four-petal flower (EBDB s017807), and tools not recorded in Einbanddatenbank; rebacked. Parchment endpapers are fragments of two bifolia from a late 13th or 14th century manuscript of Alexander de Villa Dei's Doctrinale (Pars I) with commentary, 122 x 212 mm., in two columns, Gothic book hand interspersed with Gothic littera glossularis for commentary, initials in alternating red and blue, with contrasting blue or read pen-flourished decoration, and rubrics, paragraph marks and highlighting of capitals in red, Germany or Austria [?], late 13th or 14th century; paper pastedowns from a register of tithes entitled 'Registru[m] familie pro / graugia [sic] retro lacum' listing the following names: Andre Hofmaister, Pet[rus] Rechberg[ensis]; Jans Marreut[er] Kiczkneches [?]; Tristan Marreut[er] jue[n]is gaisknecht; Pet[rus] ga[n]stl [?]; Erhact [?] kam et [?] uxo[r]e, crossed away and substituted with Peter Greid[er]grab[er]; Pet[rus] hechttn[n]a[r]io [?], substituted with Pet[rus] perz[er]; Elizabeth pfannerin, substituted with Juue[n]is phleglpuhl [?] and Erhard Rechp[er]g[er] cu[m] uxo[r]e, Austria, 16th century.
