Printed in red and black in two columns, but on single columns on leaves [pi8] recto and verso and ³[chi6] recto - ³[chi12] verso; also long lines of text interspersed with 4-line staves of musical notations on leaves [chi1] recto - ²[chi8] verso.
Woodcuts: a) The patron Saints Henricus and Cunegundis [i.e. the Holy Roman Emperor Saint Henry II and his wife Cunegunde of Luxembourg] holding Bamberg cathedral, and the arms of Heinrich Gross von Trockau as Bishop of Bamberg, leaf [pi8]v; b) Crucifixion, leaf ³[chi5]v; c) Historiated initial "T" representing the Sacrifice of Isaac, leaf ³[chi6] recto.

Illumination and decoration: Hand-colouring in gold and colours of woodcuts on leaves [pi8] verso, ³[chi5] verso and ³[chi6] recto; vertical and horizontal bounding lines in pale red for text throughout; all supplied by hand, Nuremberg, Germany, late 15th or early 16th century.
Upper pastedown: Single-sheet woodcut of Crucifixion [ca. 1492], i.e. Inc.1.A.3.3[4187a] (Oates 10).
Lower pastedown: Illuminated leaf containing the beginning of the Canon missae from a manuscript Missal, Nuremberg, Germany, second half of the 15th century: parchment, 346 x ca. 233 mm., ruled in dark brown ink for two columns of 29 lines (below top bounding line), Gothic bookhand in dark brown ink, 10-line illuminated initial T in foliate design, inhabited by Christ represented as bound to the vertical minim of the letter, all set against a red ground with gold spray decoration, with foliate extensions in colours and gold, initials and cross signs in alternating red and blue.

NoteInscribed 'p[ro] [con]ue[n]tu fr[atru]m ord[inis] p[raedica]tor[um] in [?] nürnb[er]g[er]' on leaf v5 verso, i.e. the Dominican monastery of Sankt Maria (friars) of Nuremberg [rather than the convent of Sankt Katharina (nuns)], as suggested by the leather tags inserted in the Proprium sanctorum to mark feasts of the Virgin Mary, late 15th or early 16th century. Henry Hucks Gibbs, 1st baron of Aldenham, his purchase note 'Henry H. Gibbs / St Dunstans / (1865) £ 12' on upper right corner of first upper free endpaper, and armorial bookplate, inscribed 'Aldenham: House: Herts' pasted onto second upper free endpaper, marked 'L/I.3' and 'Missal N° 4' in pencil. Probably sold at the Aldenham sale, Sotheby's, London, 22-24 March 1937. Given to the library by Alwyn Faber Scholfield, University Librarian (1923-1949), on 23 March 1937: see note on first upper free endpaper and bookplate on second upper free endpaper.
Description de la reliureBlind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards bevelled along inner edges, sewn on double-split spine bands, with single cord endbands covered by cover pigskin, parchment single-sheet Crucifixion woodcut and illuminated manuscript leaf used as upper and lower pastedowns respectively, spine guards on parchment, including fragments from a 15th-century German manuscript, two rectangular decorated brass catches at fore-edge of upper board, two decorated brass plaquettes holding fastening pigskin straps and decorated brass clasps at fore-edge of lower board, traces of brass corner and centre bosses (all wanting), and brown leather marking tabs mounted on parchment slips horizontally inserted in the volume, by the binding workshop of the Nuremberg Dominicans known as Nürnberg Dominikanerkloster 2. Gruppe (EBDB w000082), active in Nuremberg between 1483 and 1522. Blind tools are as follows: lobed leaf (Schwenke/Schunke Blatt 119; EBDB s006536), foliate roll (Kyriss 021.2.01; Schwenke/Schunke Laubstab 12; EBDB r000162), diamond tendrils (Kyriss 021.2.03; EBDB s006528), Maria cartouche ( EBDB s006540), and gathered frills of perennial buds (Kyriss 021.2.02; Schwenke/Schunke Blattwerk 521; EBDB s006529).
