NoteInscribed 'Liber cap[itu]li ecclesie sancti amandi in urach' on leaf [a1] recto, late 15th or early 16th century, i.e. the collegiate church of S. Amandus in Urach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, founded in 1477 by the Fratres vitae communis [The Brethren of the Common Life], changed to secular clergy in 1516, dissolved in 1534. Inscribed 'Monasterij S: Em[m]eramj' on leaf [a2] recto, 18th century, i.e. the Benedictine monastery of SS. Emmeramus, Georgius, Secundarius, Dionysius, Wolfgangus, at Regensburg, Germany. Alexander of Auchmull, his armorial bookplate with motto 'Quod tibi ne alteri' on upper pastedown. Inscribed 'Ex lib: W. A. Smith 1872' followed by note on imprints on first upper free endpaper, i.e. William Alexander Smith, solicitor, of Newark and Lincoln. George Dunn of Woolley Hall, Maidenhead, his booklabel on upper pastedown and notes in pencil, including acquisition note 'G.D. / July 1899' and 'F130 Oct. 99', on verso of first upper free endpaper. Listed in Francis Jenkinson, A list of the incunabula collected by George Dunn : arranged to illustrate the history of printing, [Oxford] : Printed at the Oxford university press for the Bibliographical society, 1923, p. 11, no. 223. Bought at Dunn's sale, II portion, Sotheby's, London, 2-6 February 1914, lot 822.
Binding noteBlind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, bevelled along inside edges, sewn on four double spine bands, with end-bands on whittawed leather with simple hemp sawing, two decorated brass catches at fore-edge of upper board, two decorated brass catches secured to two pigskin fastening straps inserted at fore-edge of lower board, fragments from a parchment manuscript, 11th century, used as guards at centre of gatherings, bookblock edges painted blue, Germany, late 16th or early 17th century; manuscript title 'S[an]cti / Bernardi / Opuscula' and imprints 'Colon. 1475' on upper and third spine compartment respectively, by W. A. Smith, England, ca. 1872.
Decoration NoteInitials, paragraph marks, underlining of captions and highlighting of printed capitals and words supplied by hand in red, initial on leaf [a2] recto with pen-work decoration in black, Germany, Cologne [?], late 15th century.
