NoteInscribed 'Liber Cartusien[sium] in Buchshaim p[ro]pe Me[m]ming[e]n in quo [con]tinet[ur] Elucidari[us] scripturar[um] que ex Biblia trahu[n]t fundamentum M[a]g[ist]ri Hanirici [sic] Gerung quond[am] Syndici Nur[i]nb[er]gen[sis] Donat[us] ab honorabili d[omi]no Joh[ann]e Waltheri pl[e]b[a]no ecc[les]ie Ma[r]ie i[n] Me[m]mingen oret[ur] p[ro] eo' on leaf [a1] recto, and 'Cartusien[sium] in Buchshaim' on leaves [a1] recto and [A9] verso, identified as Buxheim Charterhouse of S. Maria, near Memmingen in the diocese of Augsburg, ca. 1479. Armorial bookstamp 'Bibl. Buxheim' on leaf [a2] recto, 18th century [?]. The Buxheim Charterhouse was founded in 1402, dissolved in 1803. Following the dissolution of the monastery, the library became the property Graf Maximilian von Ostein in 1803, his sister Gräfin von Hatzfeld in 1809, their cousin Graf Friedrich Carl Rudolp von Waldbott- Bassenheim in 1810. Sold with the rest of the library by his son, Hugo Philipp von Waldbott-Bassenheim by auction through the bookseller Karl Fr. Mayer, Munich, September 1883, lot 3180. George Dunn of Woolley Hall, Maidenhead, his booklabel on upper pastedown, and note 'G.D. Jan. 1895' with price in Greek 'X m' in pencil on leaf [a1] recto; his sale, III portion, Sotheby's, London, 22-29 November 1917, lot 3340. Listed in Francis Jenkinson, A list of the incunabula collected by George Dunn : arranged to illustrate the history of printing, [Oxford] : Printed at the Oxford university press for the Bibliographical society, 1923, p. 15, no. 301. Geoffrey Keynes, his inscription in pencil on Dunn's booklabel on upper pastedown; listed in G. Keynes, Bibliotheca Bibliographici. London : 1964, p. 6, no. 28. Acquired with much of the Keynes library in 1982.
Binding noteHalf blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, with fragments from 14th- and 15th-century manuscripts on parchment and paper used as spine and quire guards, brass catches at fore-edge of upper board, and stubs of pigskin straps fixed to the fore-edge of the lower board by brass plaques, Germany, late 15th century. Old manuscript title erased in upper spine compartment and old shelfmark, possibly 'S 220' or 'O 220', in red ink in lower spine compartment.
