L'acquisto nel 1720 della biblioteca del conte padovano Alfonso Alvarotti costituì il nucleo originario della raccolta di incunaboli. Il fondo si accrebbe poi lentamente per vari lasciti e donazioni durante il corso del sec. XVIII, avendo infine un rapido e forte incremento al tempo delle soppressioni napoleoniche e poi del Regno d'Italia, quando affluirono in biblioteca numerosi incunaboli delle corporazioni soppresse"
